Hot Hot Sauce Sauce is a hot sauce company I started with two friends hand-made at Bait Shop. For the brand, I wanted it to look nothing like more traditional hot sauce brands and really lean into an elegance and sophistication. By showing off the fresh, natural ingredients of the sauce was important to me as I wanted the color to be the real star here.

For the photoshoot, I worked with the incomparable Kyle Johnson to and Kendra and Carl of Doing A Good to help style the models.

Conceived by The Derschang Group and designed by Linda Derschang, Bill Falconer, and Soni Davé-Schock; Tallulah's is a neighborhood café located on 19th & Mercer in Capitol Hill. The feeling of the space was inspired by a recent trip to Morocco, a love of mid-century design and the feeling of Big Sur in the 1970’s. With a veggie-friendly, Mediterranean-influenced American fare menu, Tallulah's delivers simple, lovely food.

I was asked to develop and design a complete brand experience that celebrated the location of the restaurant and evoked the charm of the light, fresh cuisine. I imagined a clean, bold, and bright aesthetic to embrace the bar's attitude and decor. Due to its abundance in the area, the rosemary leaf was utilized to reflect the togetherness in which the neighborhood shares. The story unfolds with beautiful photography across their website and social media.

Bus Magazine is a quarterly lifestyle magazine that delivers passionate, creative and visually stunning stories about city life. The goal is to embody the character, the voice, and the spirit of its readers. A lifestyle magazine for the city. Take a complete read through here.

This was a school project where I was tasked with creating all the content and design for a magazine. I really wanted to showcase a wide range of layout skills with some more traditional, and more breaking the mold of a normal magazine. Each article and spread was created as individual works of art to its specific content.

Herbivore is natural skin care product company based out of Seattle co-founded by husband and wife duo, Julia Wills and Alexander Kummerow, out of their own kitchen in 2011. They bring you products that are safe, non-toxic, and highly effective. They believe in tangible results you can see and feel, and they believe in the power of nature to bring these results with products that are toxin free, synthetic free, cruelty free, plant-based and vegan.

Here I was tasked with designing a brand catalog to showcase their products with in depth messaging and descriptions. Furthermore, they asked me to redesign and layout their packaging and custom build website.

Conceived by The Derschang Group and designed by Linda Derschang and Bill Falconer; Bait Shop is your local dive bar on North Broadway in Capitol Hill. Bait Shop is a nautical iteration of the Linda’s look, with a giant Marlin mounted on the wall, accented by the hood of a Firebird and other 1970s pieces. This bar is predictably a crowd pleaser, thanks in part to the sunny cocktails, fried fare, and brunch options.

I was asked to develop and design a complete brand experience that felt timeless and everlasting. I imagined a bold yet simple branding aesthetic that could be celebrated across all mediums. This less-is-more approach allows for the all the little quirks of the bar and staff to shine. The story unfolds throughout different menu designs with a 1970's family's collection of photographs from a summer long fishing trip. Bait Shop has only been around for a few years, but through the design and decor the goal was to make it stand the test of time.

Historic, distinguished, and adventurous—providing the Pacific Northwest with a journey in flight and craftsmanship since 1946. For seaplane travel, Kenmore Air is the expert in flight that provides The Northwest with a one-of-a-kind travel experience. 

For this school project, I was tasked with creating a new brand identity for Kenmore Air with design partner in crime, Jess Ornelas. When first starting the project, we knew that the entire brand from top to bottom needed to be reworked to better reflect the flying experience you have with smaller planes. With such great history, we wanted to create something that could stand the test of time but still feel modern, clean, and elegant without being too fancy.

#LOVETHEHILL is an interactive installation installed in a storefront on Broadway between the streets of Pike and Pine. The purpose of the installation is to examine the evolution of Capitol Hill over the last 30 years and to document the impact of increased development and gentrification on the quality of life in the neighborhood.

The installation has extended into a short documentary film with various people discussing their experiences over the years amidst all the change. We would like to promote a public discussion that balances the positive attachment people have for the hill with their concerns about changes. 

The project includes statistical analysis as well as anecdotal elements. It engages the attention and involvement of the community with the graphic transformation of the building and through the assembling of data which will be collected from a wide variety of sources, including prominent business owners, local creatives, and ordinary citizens.

To celebrate the film and installation, we threw a 2-day event during Capitol Hill Block Party 2015 at The Seattle Boxing Gym. 13 Capitol Hill bands played, slayed, and delighted from the confines of a boxing ring. Further pushing the music, we put out a mixtape promoting over 30+ bands from the neighborhood whom contributed music pertaining to the ever evolving change.

The hashtag #lovethehill on social media is still going strong and we were glad to be able to strike a conversation to a neighborhood that has meant so much to our lives.

Deep Sea Sugar and Salt is a cake company focusing on Northwest inspired specialty cakes for any occasion founded by Charlie Dunmire. Her endless inspiration comes from her Georgetown neighborhood, Douglas firs, porter beer, and her 15 years working as a baker from the Pacific Northwest.

She opened a brick and mortar shop at the locally infamous Carlton Market in the Georgetown neighborhood. This location focuses on her cakes, beer, wine, flowers, and some simple, basic groceries. The community and neighborhood are very important to her and she wants her business to not only be involved with the area but to also help it thrive.

For her brand, I wanted to tell her story in a clear, concise, and interesting manner that allows her to be the face of the company, while still allowing the cakes to be the star.

FERNET COIN
2015

When Fernet-Branca asked me to make their Seattle edition to their infamous Fernet Coin, I couldn't be more thrilled. I had never designed an actual coin before and I felt it a great way to not only challenge myself but also to embrace this beautiful city. 

When you lay down a Fernet-Branca coin on the bar, you’re making a statement. It’s like a knock on the door of a members-only establishment. You and the bartender know that you mean business.

After a few iterations, which you can see, the orca lost big time and the client loved the idea of a ferry representing them. Just like the ferries, Fernet can take you places, enjoy company with friends, and help you interact with this city in ways you never thought could be possible.

All the laughter, the intention, the successes we’ve had. The challenges, the mistakes. That project that worked. The one that didn’t, but taught us so much. Our time here has been... all everything.

My two years in 'second college' went by all too fast, but I'm glad it all culminated into one big show to celebrate everyone's hard work. For this event, I was selected as a leader and art director to help establish the identity, work flow, team groups, and time management. 

I was able to oversee all the elements of the event and work with multiple teams that included branding, exhibit design, web design, wayfinding, and production. This was truly a group effort and everyone played their great roles respectively. 

Coming up for the name of the event, I was inspired by rapper terms "All White Every Thing" & "All Gold Every Thing" which seemed to be very playful to me. I thought it was an all encompassing and very catchy phrase. The word 'THING' was able to be interchanged into multiple different words that we created for each individual to personalize their work. After much deliberation we decided on a word bank and the students picked three to best describe themselves. After explaining how All Every Thing could work for our showcase of talents, the branding team was on board and we continued onto working on the logo, brand colors, and fonts. 

I really enjoyed developing and pushing the logo to its final stages and incorporating elements of it into the poster. I was lucky enough to work with a branding team that included Jessica Ornelas, Adam Boehmer, Dyan Doody, Kelly Rozich, Carter Das, Sari Jack, John Twentyfive, Erik Maxwell, and April Stone. All were able to bring their talents and ideas to the table, and we all worked really well together.

I really wanted to extend the brand into blue room photographs so each individual could let their personality shine, as you can see I am jumping for joy as usual. The video was another great chance to hit the audience with really quick patterns, visuals, and every day devices we utilized. The video team did a great job with it. 

The web team did a phenomenal job with the Portshowlio website and I was so hyped to see all the additional scroll features and each persons presentations. They were able to execute not only on brand but also push it further. 

I thoroughly enjoyed working with all the students on this project and being a leader is a role that I can definitely thrive in. I think being a good leader is not only coming up with ideas and being open to others, but to allow each individual to showcase their strengths and talents. None of this could have been possible without everyone working together.

Save Yourselves is a design zine I started in May of 2016 and this highlights some of the first issue which is all about mission statements. Every edition of Save Yourselves will be different. Various topics will be discussed and engaged. Music will be celebrated. Color will be examined. Letters will be embraced. The feeling of actual paper will awaken. Out For Stardom was a record label and art collective I ran for a little over seven years. During that time we released 14 albums from artists including Mad Rad, Fresh Espresso, Metal Chocolates, Katie Kate, and Don’t Talk To The Cops!.

I sometimes functioned as a one man label with some help from the respective bands. Having handled a lot of the public relations and bookings, I planned shows and events including album releases, US tours, and private parties. I created and designed album releases along with all promotional tools like books, calendars, t-shirts, stickers, and custom packaging.

Katie Kate is a force. A dark horse with an extensive classical background, she channels her quirky, emotive lyrics through the lenses of hip hop by blending the swagger, attitude, and rhythms with an undeniable pop aura.  Kate is such a powerful human being, I wanted the site to embrace her visual identity without taking too much away from her already strong developed aesthetic.

When developing her site, we both agreed we wanted it to be very less is more and really let the minimal content live on its own. By building out a simple hidden navigation bar that animates upon hover, it really let the amazing photography by Zoe Rain shine. The music and the videos needed to be highlighted, so I thought best to have really large hero images for all.

ST. GERMAIN - VIVE THE DAYLIFE

Bacardi's St-Germain is a young elderflower liqueur brand that had become instantly popular with bartenders upon launch, yet growth had slowed. Known often as bartenders duct-tape, it found itself as an ingredient brand with a consumer awareness problem. People who tried it, loved it, but many didn't know it was even in their drink. 

Working with POSSIBLE including Shawn Herron and many others, I was asked to help design print, web, and video collateral for St. Germain. To reintroduce the brand to the consumer we needed to establish the mindset, occasion, and a unique serve which would establish the brand in pop culture.

Here you can see multiple posters to promote their Société of 5 Petals that I created. This was for an exclusive group that were some of St-Germain's biggest supporters.

We built a campaign that pushed against the crowded nightlife filled with big spending brands, and Vive the Daylife was born. It was a mantra to slow down and savor life's beautiful moments, highlighting the St-Germain Cocktail served in their Carafe. You can see video cards that I created for the video seen HERE and HERE.

SULTRY SPIRITS FOR STARBUCKS RESERVE

Sultry Spirits is a company spawned from Scrappy's Bitter's to be made exclusively for Starbucks for their Roastery Reserve locations. This cherry flavored bitters is used in a coffee cocktail that they make for those who want to explore the unknown.

For this project I art directed and did all the design and layouts. I brought in my good friends Mike Kays and Jess Ornelas to help with custom hand-drawn type and icons. In this article you can see an old-fashioned being made with Angostura bitters but now they use these cherry bitters in a very similar way. Yum!

On March 24th, 2014 I decided to quit smoking FOREVER. To celebrate this joyous occasion I put together three different campaigns to promote not smoking. This was a great project to work on because it kept me wanting cigarettes even less. In all of my research and all of the nasty, gross information I found out about what smoking can do I am so happy that is behind me. 

The first campaign was to flip traditional cigarette advertisements into clever ways to tell you how bad smoking is. The second one was meant to play up the classic fairytale Little Red Riding Hood. The innocence and child-like mentality is exactly how dumb people actually are when it comes to smoking.

I love taking a traditional greeting card and spinning it on its head. With these, I took famous rap lyrics from ATCQ, Wu Tang, Pharcyde, Biggie, and LL Cool J and mashed them with adorable drawings that helped describe each scene. These were really fun to create and now has me making custom Valentine's Day cards every year for friends and loved ones.

I designed this a few years ago for Smith – A Seattle bar serving seasonal New American pub fare, cocktails & many beers in a rustic woodsy space. I wanted to really embrace and show off the interior of the location while still focusing on the beauty of the food & drink. I thought photography would be best to highlight this place that some say have the best burger in town. I built a clean parallax website for the user to explore.

This was an online magazine I designed to embrace the city of Seattle's culture, nightlife, and history. I wanted every part of it to just ooze the Emerald City. I developed a brand and merchandise for the site as well, but here I wanted to focus on the visual aesthetic of the site. 

I wanted the magazine's content to have plenty of room to breathe and engage the viewer. To do this, I created white space – a shit ton of white space. I built out a custom parallax scroll feature for the in depth reading of each article. You really don't get much better than a Shawn Kemp 404 page!

A mobile app prototype + branding project. Doing your laundry in a public setting can be disorganized, time consuming, and inefficient. Whirl can streamline your entire interaction with the laundromat and your laundry. Walk through the app here.

In this school project, I worked with two others to develop the prototype from inception to completion. We first started with our market research, user profiles, and competing applications. This led us to creating user profiles and customer journey maps for these individuals. As we continued to develop the app, we did user testing with our initial paper prototypes and later more final wireframes. 

I wanted the design of the app to be very modern and utilize lots of white space to create a better experience for our users. Customizing the maps and the developing original icons gave me a chance to further push the brand across all parts of the application. We developed marketing materials, print collateral, and a walk through video to better show case the idea behind Whirl.

Palace Kitchen has long been a Seattle favorite for locals, industry folks and family gatherings. You can cozy up in one of their dimly lit booths and watch their team work in the open kitchen, grilling whole trout and chickens over our applewood grill or paying homage to a plate of spring vegetables.

For this website, I was asked to do the front end design while working with my good friends over at Transom Design. Transom has a great group of designers and developers for me to bounce ideas off of and collaborate with. I designed 5+ pages for web, tablet, and mobile breakpoints.

An “Internet of Things” project with a mobile app and physical prototype. Making time to play with your pet can be a very time consuming, remorseful experience. Pingo is an interactive cat toy and mobile app designed to bring pets and their pet owners closer together even when far away. Walk through the app here.

For this school project, I was tasked with developing an application that could work with a physical "Internet of Things" device. I first started with market research, user profiles, and competing applications. This led to creating user profiles and customer journey maps for these individuals. As I continued to develop the app, I did user testing with the initial paper prototypes and later more final wireframes.

I wanted the design to be playful and really embrace the feeling you get playing old Nintendo as a child. The game is basically a newer version of Pong so I felt the branding should be extended across all mediums to embody these emotions we get. An original set of icons, user icons, and board levels were developed for each user to customize their gaming experience. A mascot, OG Steve, was created to extend the brand into marketing and give the user someone to relate to.

A prototype for a user-to-user app that allows those to be setup as a personal tour guide in select cities and show tourists a different side of the city. A person traveling can look up users in the app based on rating, tour preferences, and availability. Walk through the app here.

I wanted the design of this app to be very modern, smart, and user-friendly. With so many varying jaunts to choose from, I wanted the user to be able to explore and search easily with accessible tabbed tags. The white space and placement of photography are equally important to the user as they dive deeper into the application.

This was also a great chance for me to nerd out on my long lost love, Swiss Design. +) Yes, that is a Swiss happy face.

They control all the music, the visuals, and the complete vibe of the night. Every night has been different and it's been a pleasure to hear and see so many great people.

This was a great perpetual project to work on because I am one of those found imagery nerds that has piles upon piles of old Life magazines, newspaper clippings, vintage posters, and cigar boxes. This was a great chance to take some of this imagery, clean it up, and showcase it for each individual. I love finding old works and refreshing them into something new.

RIP GASH

In March 2016, we lost one of the greatest men I have ever known – Jon "Gash" Sanders. I've known him for 8+ years and he was really the most genuine dude. It was great to see the neighborhood friends and family come together for one night to pay homage to him. I designed some a poster, a pin, and some shirts in honor of Gash and happy to say we raised over $5,000 for his family. RIP, brother.

Octopus Festival is a part of Decibel Festival now, but a few years ago it was a grimey little festival over at Lofi. The band Nightmare Fortress asked me to put together a poster for their showcase and I'm glad they did. This castle was one of my favorite pieces to create and I try to slyly use it elsewhere. I was asked to flip the logo for Screwdriver Bar to help celebrate a chinese food pop up happening in July of 2017. Two chefs are taking over the entire bar and serving up some of the most delicious foods. I wanted to take their original logo and simplify it while still embracing Chinese culture, style, and aesthetic.

I've always loved how brash and vocal Peaches has been, and I wanted my poster to not only reflect her music but also her attitude. After a few sketches, I knew I had nailed it. After a few weeks on poles and in the press, the venue actually asked for another version that wasn't so graphic. Nobody told Peaches because we both know she would have preferred this one.

I wasn’t very familiar with her, but I really liked the idea of an apple to talk to the idea of growth and ripening into a new seasoned artist. It was also a nod to the curves of the beautiful black woman that she is. Swoon!

Over the past few years I have been hosting a weekly DJ night with some really great friends, experienced musicians, vinyl nerds, and some of Seattle's best humans. They control all the music, the visuals, and the complete vibe of the night. Every night has been different and it's been a pleasure to hear and see so many great people.

This was a great perpetual project to work on for multiple reasons. I love the idea of getting to know someone better through music and childhood photos. Putting these slogans together for each individual was too much fun for me as a copywriter and I hope that they speak candidly about each individual.
